Cycle Sport Pendle News July - September 2009
Preston Town Centre race and Exeter National Cyclcross 20th September 2009 On Sunday older CSP riders were in serious race action. At Preston: Sam Boast age16 finished an excellent 3rd in a 3/4 category senior race around Preston City centre, 30 laps of a 1km technical circuit proved tricky but worthwhile for the young rider from Colne. Well done Sam. In the main race of the day at Preston Go-Ride Coach and local CSP helper Simon Wilson, 26, and an accomplished racer too finished in 11th place against strong national level competition. Our local top rider Ian Wilkinson was a non starter nursing his cuts and bruises from a spill in the previous weeks Tour of Britain race. Graham Briggs from Yorkshire was the winner. At Exeter round of the National Trophy Cyclocross: our local off road specialist Paul Oldham (Hope Tech Racing) of Trawden travelled all the way to Exeter and won the country’s top senior Cyclo Cross race beating Belgian rider Jan Van Dael. 16 year old CSP rider Martin Woffindin finished in 12th spot in the Junior race against the best CX Junior riders in the country, and encouragingly within 3 minutes of the country top under 18 year olds. Read the full report on at BC here. Club coach and former Tour of Britain Rider Alan Gornall said “Sam and Martin have put in some good performances this season and we will build on that next year with the formation of an under 18s Team”. Joint Club Session with Lancaster Cog Set 19th September 2009 12 young Cycle Sport Pendle riders travelled to Lancaster on Saturday to take part in a joint coaching session with riders from the City and from Blackpool. 90 boys and girls age 8 – 14 took part in various skill activities and the final hour of the morning was given over to some age group racing. CSP coach Martin Brass said “it was a great experience for our riders and the purpose built circuit based at the Salt Eyre sport centre is a great facility” After the session a group of CSP members, coaches and parents enjoyed a group ride on one of the many cycle paths in the area and headed off to Glasson Dock. Cycle Sport Pendle at Weaver Valley Cyclocross 6th september 2009 Cycle Sport Pendle riders ride in the first North West cyclocross event at Weaver Valley on the 6th September 2009. A sunny dry day, some very fast racing - good fun was had by all. In the Under 12s race on a shorter course, Bailey Payne came a very credible 6th, Harry French came an excellent 11th, and Alfie Payne came in 15th and by no means last! All our 3 riders put in a really good effort, and rode with broad grins on their faces. In the Youth (U14/U16) race Connor French came 21st, excellent considering this is his first Cyclocross race, still an U14 and on a mountain bike. In the very fast senior race Martin Woffindin (Junior) came 5th overall - an excellent result, out of a field of 85, with some very good riders taking part. This is Martin's second year as Junior at Cyclocross. Len Woffindin came in at 79th!
Cycle Sport Pendle help with an ASDA Pedal Power event, at ASDA Colne 29th August 2009 Cycle Sport Pendle provided a number of fun cycling activities for local people at ASDA on Saturday, and helped raise money for ASDA Pedal Power:
Finally, ASDA invited us to do bag packing to raise money for our club. We had a number of willing volunteers with supporting adults, a credit to all members that helped with this. Money raised by bag packing and from the collection boxes in the entrance is being spilt beetween Cycle Sport Pendle and the charities that ASDA are supporting with their cycling initiative. Local company Hope Technology kindly provided CSP with new banners for use at ASDA and future events. Thanks to Hope. Cycle Sport Pendle would like to thank ASDA for their support of our cycling activities for young people in Pendle. CSP Go-Ride at Colne Grand Prix - Wednesday 15th July 6:30 - 8pm Cycle Sport Pendle ran Go-Ride activities on the car park next to the Union Pub on the night of the racing at Colne Grand Prix. The club ran a team competition over two cycling courses, with limbo bars, bottle pickup, and cones. Simon Wilson brought additional bikes which allowed local children to have a go at riding and perfect some cycling skills. We finished by 8pm at the start of the Elite race to watch Simon Wilson and Martin Woffindin, as well as other local riders - Ian Wilkinson and Paul Oldham. Sam Boast rode in the support race. Martin Woffindin wins the 3/4 town centre race at Brighouse 7th July 2009 Cycle Sport Pendle 16 year old Junior rider Martin Woffindin wins the 3/4 category senior Brighouse town centre crit, 7th July 2009, in the pouring rain. Against a strong field, Martin rode away from the main bunch with 12 laps of the half mile circuit to go, held a good gap of over 15 seconds and won with 9 seconds in hand. See Martin on British Cycling, some excellent pictures. And in the Brighouse Echo, see the 4th picture. There is also a good picture of Sam Boast going round the bend. |
