Diary and Competitions

Listed below are the main local Youth racing events for North West riders.

Please read down this page for more information. We have left at the bottom of this page activities and racing events that have now finished for 2010, so that newer riders can more easily see what is available over the year.

BC membership with a provisional license (free for Youth) is required for racing events (except Go-Race) otherwise you will be asked to pay a day membership fee on top of your race fee.

Please read "Introduction to Cycle Racing" and "Youth Gear Restrictions" pages.

Manchester Velodrome Track Time for North West Go-Ride Clubs.

Any CSP members wanting to go please call Len W or Martin Brass, as a CSP coach needs to go as well and we will send you the consent form.

Track time availability for Go-Ride clubs who have young riders who are wanting to ride track leagues and regional omnium series events, but lack track experience.

We are going to have two groups in each session, this may not be a strictly U12 and U14&U16 but may be a mix of U12's&U14's and another group of 2nd year U14's&U16's. this allows us to make maximum use of the track time available.

The riders need to be First Claim Members of your Go-Ride clubs, and we would like the riders attending all the sessions if possible, however if this is not possible we totally understand (but we are trying to encourage riders not just to drop into one or two of their five sessions). We would also like a club coach from each club (with riders attending) to attend the sessions, our thinking behind this is that one of our aims is to be able to pass the session plans over to you the club coaches in future years, so you can run the sessions with our guidance.

The sessions will be free of charge to the riders, however if they don't have their own track bikes, they will need to arrange their own track bike hire from the velodrome and hire shoes if they do not have the old style of Look cleats. (no pedals are allowed to be swapped on the hire bikes)

Your parents will need to sign a parental consent form, if you could please have this filled in for the start of the session:

The North West track dates are all Tuesdays:

20th April - 7pm till 10pm (the first session only is 7pm start)

4th May - 8pm till 10pm

25th May - 8pm till 10pm

8th June - 8pm till 10pm

22nd June - 8pm till 10pm

We would ideally like riders to arrive an hour before hand (to get changed, sort out hire bikes, etc) as we will look to have a briefing for riders and coaches around 30 mins before, that is essential for all riders to hear and be part of (we are compassionate with travelling great distances into Manchester city centre, so just do your best)

Sum up:

  • The North West clubs will get every other week, so five sessions out of the 10 between April and July (the Yorkshire clubs will have the other weeks) we will then have another two sessions in Aug/Sept after the track nationals and before track league starts again.
  • The sessions will have a maximum of 40 riders, how we get these we are yet to decide however we will know more once we have a rough idea of numbers.
  • A club coach/trainee coach from each of the clubs involved needs to be present if there riders are attending (part of these sessions in about coaching coaches)
  • Riders need to be looking to race track either this coming summer or next autumn / winter
  • The sessions are free of charge, however riders must pay for bike and shoe hire if needed
  • The sessions will be based around basic core track racing principals (more details below) so that if a young rider were to attend all five sessions, they should be able to race a track league event afterwards
  • Session plans will be handed out to club coaches and handouts to the riders to back up the coaching points we are looking to establish

The five sessions will be based on the basic principals of track riding/racing:

  • Bunch riding
  • Bike handling
  • Observation
  • Changes and use of the track
  • Starts, sprints and going fast
