49th 3 Peaks Cyclocross Event - Sunday 25th September 2011 On a damp September morning, the 49th Three peaks cyclocross race departed from Helwith bridge in Yorkshire. Over 650 competitors began the race and ahead of them was 38 miles of the toughest cyclocross race in the UK, with over 5000 ft of climbing, including the famous peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen Y Ghent! Nick Craig from Scott Uk was the overall winner of the event with a time of 3.08:47 - Local rider and National Cyclocross champion Paul Oldham came over the line in 3rd place. Cycle Sport Pendle was represented in club kit by Martin Brass and John Rutter, with Alan Dorrington riding in his 'Here come the Belgians' kit and Ashton Payne in Hope Tech colours. What a fantastic ride from these four who all completed the challenging course. Many CSP members and their families made the journey over to offer their vocal support, and it could be heard from various locations around the course, with many taking their place at ribblehead viaduct and then to the finish to cheer them over the finish line in glorious sunshine. A fantastic day out. 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of this event and it would be wonderful to see more CSP riders in action!!
CSP at the Red Rose Olympic Cross, Avenham Park, Preston 18th September - the first 2011 NWCCA cross race CSP was out in force at the frist NWCCA of the season U12: 11 riders in the U12 race, in a race of 35 riders. An excellent win for Nathan Hawthorn following an epic battle over 10 laps of the course with Solomon Kerfoot-Robson, with Nathan winning with a sprint effort in the last 20m. With three other U12 riders in the top 10, and our first girl Lucy Horrocks in 12th overall and 2nd U12 girl. Well done to Nathan, JackD, JackB, Cory, Lucy, Alfie, Dominic, Georgia, Matt, Shannon, Tilly. Youth: 5 CSP riders in the Youth race, in a race of 23 riders. An excellent 3rd overall by Oliver Payton, behind two very strong U16 riders, and completing part of the last lap with a puncture, very well done Oliver. Well done also to our other riders: Thomas, Connor, Bailey and Harry. Main Race: 5 CSP riders in Orange, and 3 CSP members riding in other colours. For the first 2 laps, CSP rider Martin Woffindin was well on his way to a clear 3rd place, then he had a pucture. He limped back to the pits to get his spare bike from the CSP pit crew (most of the CSP youth and U12 riders). Sticky grass and mud caused many broken rear mechs, with Peter Payton suffering, and Martin on his next lap. Martin ran a third of a lap with a broken bike, loosing places. Lewis Craven by this time had caught Martin and gone past, only to suffer from a broken mech as well. After all this drama, and a busy time for the CSP pit crew, Martin finished 7th overall. Well done to Mark Horrocks, Ian Ashworth, John Rutter and Peter Payton, and also to Alan Dorrington, Mark Turner, Ashton Payne. Special congratulations to the overall winner Paul Oldham riding in his National Champion's jersey.

CSP star at the CDNW SIS Circuit Races League, Preston, August 2011 (by Len Woffindin) Nathan Hawthorn takes the Youth C trophy A really good season for CSP riders at Preston, with many of our youth riders regularly taking part in all five youth age categories. In fact we have been accused of an orange takeover!! So very well done to all our riders for having a go, with smiles on their faces. And what a "go" it was this year, with some excellent performances from all our CSP riders. At the sharp end of the races, the The Youth A, B and C riders did 8 laps of the large undulating circuit, quite a challenge for young beginnners. The Youth D and E riders competed over 6 laps of the short circuit. Youth A In the tough group, Oliver Payton, Connor French and Austin Pilkington all performed very well against the more experienced riders. Well done to all three. Youth B Some excellent racing in the Youth B category by Timothy Jones, Harry French and Bailey Payne against some very strong and more experienced opposition. Well done to all three. Youth C Well done to CSP rider Nathan Hawthorn for taking the Youth C trophy, with some excellent Youth C wins during the season. A fantastic racing battle between Nathan and Kim took place just about every week, with these two riders jumping on the back of the Youth A riders for the last two laps and contesting the sprint at the end. Our other Youth C riders all did very well and showed some excellent improvement in their racing over summer: Georgia Savory, Dominic Rutter, Cory Edmondson, Matthew Turner, Jack Dorrington, Jack Barlow, Thomas Payton. Youth D Well done to Shannon Hawthorn and Alfie Payne for some excellent rides, with Alfie keeping well up to the front of each race. Youth E Well done to Tilly Barlow, Ella Dorrington and Ephram Ashworth. Ephram did two laps in his first race with a very spirited ride on a single gear bike, he certainly impressed all the commissaires! Juniors and Seniors CSP riders Martin Woffindin and Sam Boast have ridden the league this year, both performing well in the strongly competitive senior race.
CSP riders have really progressed this year, we are becoming a force to be reckoned with, so keep it up. It has been a pleasure to see all our riders doing so well each week. See pictures onthe CDNW website.
Socks by A.N Anon CSP socks will soon be in stock, these will be of the traditional length, i.e. not half way up the leg, and when pulled up properly they will be neat, tidy and Nora Batty wrinkle free. Wearing them is not compulsory of course and other socks of the same ilk are more than acceptable, for example white, black, Grey even green or ‘Hope’ socks will go perfectly well with our super duper orange kit. (Orange and green should never be seen........ except with CSP gear) Completely out of the question are the ‘Wigg o no’ knee lengthy socks, he must get paid a lot of money to wear them like that, football socks, hiking boot socks (at least they have an outdoor/sporting theme)........ but worst of all throwing your pricy and wonderful CSP kit on and leaving on socks you have obviously had on all day or week at school or work, the type Gran got you at Christmas, for goodness sake tell her about the new CSP stocks ! This will be enforced by the sock police and ex Tour De France la femine rider Sue Gornall will operate an on the spot 50p fine system, rather like a swear box, I’d rather hear a few naughty words than ride behind someone with rugby socks on !!!. Sue is always immaculately turned out, just like you would expect an ex Tour rider, so be on your guard.
Preston Grand Prix/Racing News! - report by Peter Boast Young Cycle Sport Pendle riders have been in the thick of the action over the weekend at the City of Preston Grand Prix. With two third places! While local ace and CSP supporter Ian Wilkinson from Barnoldswick was hitting top spot of the podium in the Elite race for the country’s top riders, C.S.P youngsters had earlier in the day got a taste of things to come by being presented to the crowd too. Nathan Hawthorn finished 3rd in the Under 12’s race around the tight city centre course. Nathan’s season continues to impress and he was a recent overall winner of the 6 race series based at the City of Manchester stadium with five wins. Nathan’s sister Shannon completed the mixed boy and girl under 10's race to complete a family double. In the under 16 boys race C.S.P was represented by the only girl in the race Amy Gornall. Amy was the centre of attention before the race with a live interview during her warm up. She rode a determined race as usual among the boys and was presented to the large crowd post race to receive a well deserved girls award in 14th place. In the main support race of the day for senior riders, 18 year old CSP rider Martin Woffindin rode a great race and made the podium in 3rd place, out sprinted at the finish by past NW regional champion Gary Adamson Team SIS from Liverpool. The big race of the day was contested by the Country’s top riders including Olympic Gold medallists and National champions but it was CSP hero ‘superman Wilko’ who came out on top. Ian is showing great form of late after his early season was disrupted with a broken collarbone. Selection for Septembers Tour of Britain is Ian’s target and several recent wins must have him in the frame. In the meantime there has been plenty of mid week action for other CSP riders at the SIS Criterium league in Preston on Thursday evenings. CSP have been represented in all age categories and the club had 13 riders present at event number 11 !!!. Ella Dorrington the youngest of the bunch in the under 8s...... pancakes and hot chocolate going down well after the races!............... well done everyone.
The CSP holiday club got off to a great start with 10 keen cyclists arriving at Nelson and Colne Rugby club for some coaching, fun sessions, racing and bike rides. Day one included learning some fun mountain bike skills, Sam Horrocks and newcomer Ryan Ellison showed off some fab bunny hops, then a bike ride to the mountain bike track in Barrowford to put the skills into practice. Jack Barlow won the time trial, which nearly put Martin Brass in his grave! Day 2 included some cross country mountain bike time trials and races on our newly designed course round Alkincoates Park. Holiday clubbers learnt that age was on their side when they went head to head with coaches Martin and Kirsti. Thankfully Orange Martin kept the riders on their toes, setting a blistering pace! Tim and Lucy showed amazing determination and neither gave up against the clock. We finished off at the mountain bike track once again, with Jake displaying an amazing way to dismount!! Day 3 was the magical mystery tour to Barnoldswick, taking in the delights of Cafe Cargo, a picnic at Greenfield Locks and then back along the old railway tracks to Foulridge. Grace, Thomas and Patrick were amazing, especially on the last hill!! The holiday club continues on 15th - 17th August, with a few spaces left. Please contact Kirsti on 07725135554 if you would like your child to join us.
