National Youth Track Omnium Series

This is suitable for riders who have experience in regional track leagues as the standard of riders entering the Omnium series is high. Manchester Velodrome track accreditation is not required to compete. This competetion is not for beginners to track racing! It is a challenging series of events, extremely good fun and good experience.

NOTE: please read the full rules for the 2012 Omnium (pdf) below is a summary.

There are 3 regional series of races in the UK: Northern Area Round, Southern Area Round and Midland Area Round.

  • Each area round has a series of race meetings - see below for the Northern events.
  • Each race meeting has races for A, B and C age categories, with D and E supporting races.
  • Riders accumulate points in each race meeting, to get an omnium total for the meeting.
  • Omnium points from the rider's top 3 meetings are totalled for an Area Round total, the lowest meeting points are dropped where the rider has points from more than 3 meetings.
  • The leading riders of each round for each age category are invitied to take part in the national final in August. For the Youth A boys, Youth A girls, Youth B boys, Youth B girls the top 8 area riders will go through to the National final, and Youth C boys and girls together the top 6 will go through.
  • The national final does not include D and E category races.

There is a defined race program for each meeting (this is a summary).

  • Youth A: 5-10Km scratch race, elimination race, 8-10Km points race, 500m match sprint or Keirin, and 1Km (approx) time trial.
  • Youth B: 3-6Km scratch race, elimination race, 3-6Km points race, 500m match sprint or Keirin, and 1Km (approx) time trial.
  • Youth C: Individual Pursuit (max 1500m), 3km points race, 500m sprint or Kierin, 500m time trial.

Riders are seeded for the match sprint/Keirin and also the time trial based on the day's standing at that point.

National Youth and Junior Track Championships - 19th to 24th August 2012, Manchester

The top UK track riders will be taking part, so you do really need to have track racing experience, and be confidently competitive. However, entering is really good to get experience and race against faster riders.

The championships take place over a week.

Youth A and Junior races are entered separately, so you choose the race events you want to enter for, and these are generally on different days in the week. At Junior level the sprint events are generally dominated by sprint specific riders, with few if any entries from endurance riders. At Youth A level, many riders have a go at all events.

In recent years, an out and out sprinter has won the Junior Scratch title, and Steven Burke acheived one of the best Junior time trial times ever.

  • Junior Men: 20Km scratch, points, 1Km time trial, 3km individual pursuit, match sprint competition, Kierin, Madison.
  • Junior Women: scratch, points, 500m time trial, 2km individual pursuit, match sprint competition, Kierin.
  • Youth A Boys: scratch, points, 500m time trial, 2km individual pursuit, match sprint competition, Madison.
  • Youth A Girls: scratch, points, 500m time trial, 2km individual pursuit, match sprint competition.
  • Youth B Boys: An omnium with 500m time trial, 1500m individual pursuit, match sprint competition. This is all on one day.
  • Youth B Girls: An omnium with 500m time trial, 1500m individual pursuit, match sprint competition. This is all on one day.
  • Youth C Boys: An omnium with 500m time trial, 1500m individual pursuit, match sprint competition. This is all on one day.
  • Youth C Girls: An omnium with 500m time trial, 1500m individual pursuit, match sprint competition. This is all on one day.

For the B and C categories, there are no bunch events.

In Youth A and Junior bunch events (scratch and points), where the number of entries exceeds the track rider limits, there are heats at half distance, with riders going through to the final at full distance. The heats and finals are on the same day.
