About Cycle Sport Pendle
Cycle Sport Pendle was formed in June 2008 by a group of Pendle coaches, cyclists and officials to introduce young people into sport and leisure cycling. Cycle Sport Pendle provides a "complete cycling" experience for young male and female riders, concentrating on road, track, cyclocross, mountain biking and leisure cycling, with an insight into other forms of cycling including BMX and cycle speedway. We have formed Cycle Sport Pendle as a Go-Ride registered club with British Cycling. Why a new cycling club ? - There are several cycling clubs in the Pendle area, all have struggled to recuit new members in recent years, and individually unable to provide coaching activities for young riders in a safe environment. Cycle Sport Pendle has input and support from members of the established local clubs. Len Woffindin, Martin Brass, Alan Roper, Christine Woffindin and Rebecca Rotherham are all CRB checked by British Cycling to work with children and vulnerable adults. This is a requirement of all British cycling qualified coaches, officials and volunteers. The core group of the Cycle Sport Pendle are: Club Chairman - Peter Boast Pete Boast lives in Colne and is a member of Clayton Velo, and has been for many years. He competes in regional road and criterium races and has a keen interest in promoting youth and junior cycling. He started cycle racing at the age of 13, his son now competes. His ambition is to see more and more youngsters try out our wonderful sport. Secretary - Christine Woffindin Christine lives in Burnley and cycles for leisure. Treasurer - Neil Welsh Neil lives in Padiham, and until recently recreational cycling was Neil's bent. A late racing career now beckons, with Neil trying his hand and legs at road racing. Neil's banking and fundraising background are a real bonus for Cycle Sport Pendle. Lead Coach - Len Woffindin Len lives in Burnley and is a member of Sport City Velo, based at Manchester Velodrome. Len started more serious cycling when his son Martin took an interest at the age of 8. Len rides in the track leagues at the Velodrome (in the slow group!), rides in regional cyclcross races (near the back!), and rides for leisure on the road. Len is a British Cycling Club Coach, with additional Level 2 Track, and Level 2 road and time trial certificates. Len is a qualified coach at Manchester Velodrome, and on the coaching team for Eastlands and Sport City Velo. Len is a qualified track Derny pacing driver, a qualified cyclcross commissaire (referee) and currently training as a British Cycling road racing commissaire and working towards the British cycling Level 3 coaching award. Cycling Coach - Martin Brass Martin lives in Colne, and is a member of Pendle Forest cycling club. Martin is a Level 2 coach. Martin rides in road and criterium racing, competes in time trials, and is a past winner of the "Circuit of the dales" road race. Welfare Officer - Rebecca Rotherham Rebecca, a teacher with many years experience with young people, has taken the British Cycling training to allow her to be a cycling club welfare officer. She can be contacted by our members or parents to discuss issues relating to the wellbeing of youth members. All Round Support - Alan Roper Alan lives in Burnley and is a member of Clayton Velo, and is a core member of Cycling Development North West (CDNW). Alan is a very experienced road cyclist, and now spends a lot of his time as a British Cycling commissaire at local and regional cycle races. Sport Science Advisor - Chris Edmundson Chris is from Nelson, and now a sports science lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), Centre for Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) in Preston. His specialty subject is "cyclists". Chris brings immense sporting knowledge and scientific opportunities to our riders and coaches. Chris Ridings Chris is from Colne, and is a Clayton Velo rider. He is a former elite category rider with many wins under his belt. Chris knows Pendle and the beautiful countryside like the back of his hand! Nothing he likes better than being out on his bike. |
