CSP Coaches and Volunteers

Level 1.2.3, Go-Ride, Bikeability, Sky Ride, Mentoring. CSP has experienced coaches and rider mentors, all volunteering their time and knowledge on a regular basis. There are also several parent volunteers at sessions and in the background assisting with club organisation and administration.

All coaches are DBS checked by British Cycling, and volunteers and officials if required by British Cycling.

Best and worst sporting moment: Scoring a left footed screamer in a charity match, not bad for a bikie allergic to ball sports, a complete fluke and I don’t think I touched the ball again!….. On a bike, 3th Ronda van Sloten, Netherlands 1983 ……. Sounds impressive so it’s staying in!

Worst? Broken Leg 2009, hands down.

Other hobbies: Just cycling, I guess helping CSP grow is a hobby and a passion

Alan Gornall

Club Coach Candidate. Ex Professional cyclist, Great Britain International and Tour of Britain rider. Alan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to CSP. British Cycling ‘Team manager’ licence holder.

Best and worst sporting moment:Winning Commonwealth Games Gold medal Edinburgh 1986; Breaking my leg racing in the Isle of Man 1981

Sue Gornall

Mentor and welfare officer

Ex Great Britain International, Ladies Tour de France 1988/89/89. Sue now rides for fun and is always on hand to dispense heaps of encouragement. As the clubs welfare officer members and parents can find Sue a very usefully source of advice and guidance.

Best and worst sporting moment: Representing GB for the first time and 18th in the World Championship road race. Worst, having to abandon the Tour De France while in 16th overall

Simon Gostling

Level 2 Coach and Bikeability Instructor

Simon has a long history in cycling, both as a cyclist and as an official, and has competed in most aspects of the sport at some point.

Best sporting moments, being part of the 2002 Commonwealth Games Commissaires Team, and having an elite rider comment at the start of a race “Oh your here, you’re going to hurt our legs”, worst being outsprinted by a banana in the Great North Run

Paul Sherratt

Level 2 Coach

Retired Police Officer and Treasurer for CSP and CDPP although I am NOT a numbers man. Have played most sports but I played Cricket at county level for under 16’s. Two best sporting moments, I played at Lords taking 4 for 25 in a national schools final and also completed a marathon in 3 hours 25 minutes. Worst sporting moment is definitely completing Alp d’huez…………..in a car!

I enjoy track and Road cycling, I can no longer take part in mountain biking due to a neck injury I sustained on duty when I was run over by a baddy. I don’t like cross…..

Mark Turner

Fitness and conditioning coach, Level 2 coach, Level 2 Road and TT (candidate)

A coach for over 24 years and one of the first strength coaches in the area, coaching professional footballers, boxers, swimmers and now cyclists. Mark is an expert in gym technology and advises on setting up fitness facilities across the UK and Europe.

Best and worst sporting moment: Worst sporting moment meeting England Goal Keeper David James and not having a clue who he was, I asked him what he did for a living! Best moment – still waiting”

Other hobbies: Collecting signed team tops, riding Cyclo cross, MTB and road riding.

Neil Welsh

Level 2 (candidate)

Regular sportive and challenge rider. Track accredited rider, CSP Chairman and Clayton Velo 2nd claim member. Neil is the CSP ‘Techie’, bike kit and gadgets are Neil’s thing!

Best and worst sporting moment: Passing Chris Boardman in the Rossendale Road Club Hilly 20 Time Trial in 1987 (he’d punctured!). Burnley winning at Wembley and being promoted to the Premiership 2009. Worst: Sneezing during my track accreditation at the Velodrome and sliding from the top of the banking, burning holes into my new skin suit.

Other hobbies: Burnley Football Club Season Ticket Holder, Enjoying good food and nice wine, Camping holidays with the family.

Len Woffindin

Club Coach, Level 3 Track, Level 2 Road & TT coach, Level 2 BMX. Len is an experienced Track coach and a regular volunteer at Manchester Velodrome. He is a race commissaire (race referee) in Road, Track and Cyclo Cross disciplines. Manchester track accredited rider, rides the track league.

Best and worst sporting moment: 400m running race in 60.5 seconds as a 16 year old at school; bad fall at the track league at the Velodrome some years back, nothing broken but sore for weeks!

Martin Woffindin

Level 1, Level 2, Level 2 Track coach, Level 2 Cyclocross, Level 2 Road and TT (candidate), Cytech Level 2 mechanic and Bikeability instructor. Martin races all year round at the Track, Cyclocross, and Road. CSP RDP rider. Martin was one of the first Gold award Young Volunteers with British Cycling.

Best and worst sporting moment:Winning the first senior Crit at the Steven Burke Sports Hub in 2014. Winning at Brighouse Town Centre, winning North West U23 Cyclocross League 4 years in a row. Crashing at Preston and a chain ring puncturing leg.

Other hobbies: Cycling and bike mechanics.
